I, Rein Genuït, met Eileen and her partner and her sister at the car park at the dunes of Wassenaar. The weather looks good although it's a little bit cloudy and a rather cold wind from the north.
We start our walk through Meyendel, at the pond we see a couple of Little Grebe and a Black Necked Grebe, which is almost in summer plumage, and a Tufted Duck. On the other side of the path we have rather good sightings of a few Red-Crested Pochards and some Common Pochards.
A Nightingale is singing and after a while we see the bird as well. We walk on and three Ring Ouzels fly over our heads so do a couple of Redshanks. At Berkheide is a Wood Lark singing in the sky and a Blue Throat is showing on the top of a bush.
Back in the car park we drink a cup of coffee or tea with a Dutch treat. After that we go on to Lentevreugd, an area not far from here.
At Lentevreugd we hear and see a Grasshopper Warbler and also a Sedge Warbler. Unfortunately there is some rain when we are there. On our way back to the car we see a Whinchat and a Little Ringed Plover.
After a quick stop at the Mac near Leiden, we arrive at the Groene Jonker. Here we enjoy singing Savi’s Warbler. A Marsh Harrier is hunting over the area and on the water we see Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwell and Eurasian Teal.
A couple of Black-tailed Godwits are flying over and a Mediterranean Gull. Common Swifts are also back from Africa even as House Martin. In the reed are lot’s of birds like Reed Warbler, Reed Bunting and a lot of singing Sedge Warblers.
At the end of the afternoon I say goodbye to Eileen, her partner and her sister and with Eileen I make arrangements for tomorrow.
